Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society

From the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society website:

Mission Statement: Preserving the history of the Punta Gorda, Florida area through the beauty of mural art.

The Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society (PGHMS) is a non-profit, 501c(3) organization whose objectives include the Revitalization, Preservation and Economic Enhancement of our community through the painting of murals that depict the rich history of our area. We have no paid employees and the business of the PGHMS is conducted by a volunteer Board of Directors and Advisers.

In August 2004, Hurricane Charlie roared ashore in Punta Gorda with winds in excess of 160 mph destroying among other things, half of the 20 murals that had been painted since 1995. Through lots of effort and community support, the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society has repainted nearly all of the lost murals as well as adding additional ones throughout the community. To date, 29 murals have been painted, proudly depicting the rich history of our area.

Renderings of all of the murals are on display at the Charlotte Harbor Events & Conference Center, the Punta Gorda City Hall the old Punta Gorda Courthouse, and the Charlotte Community Foundation.

To learn more, and to get an interactive map so you can view these beautiful murals throughout Punta Gorda, visit their website: Punta Gorda Mural Society

Peace River Wildlife Center – Punta Gorda

Peace River Wildlife Center (PRWC) is a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation facility located at 3400 Ponce de Leon Parkway Punta Gorda, Florida 33950. They are in Ponce de Leon Park. Open daily from 11am-4pm. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. They also are available from 8am-5pm for injured animal intake. Please call them at (941) 637-3830.

From their website:

Started in 1978, PRWC is dedicated to the rescue, care, protection and preservation of native wildlife. Originally confined to the lanai of one of its founders, the Center quickly gained credibility and a new location as citizens learned of its successes in wildlife rehabilitation.

Since its beginnings the wildlife center has treated over sixty thousand birds and small mammals, offering a high-level of skilled care by trained and permitted wildlife rehabilitation specialists with years of experience in treating native fauna disease and trauma.

Peace River Wildlife Center is a member of the Florida Wildlife Rehabilitation Association (FWRA), the National Wildlife Rehabilitation Association (NWRA), and the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (IWRC). We are licensed and overseen and permitted by the US FWS, USDA, and FL FWC.

Currently, PRWC admits about 2,000 patients annually, a number that has increased every year since the Center’s founding. If a bird or small animal cannot be returned to its native habitat after treatment and recovery but is otherwise healthy, it becomes a permanent resident of the Center or another federally and state approved facility. Right now, the Center has almost 200 permanent residents.

All of the permanent residents are available for viewing by the public in attractive, spacious aviaries and habitats, suggestive of their native environments. Among the birds available for viewing are eagles, hawks, owls, ospreys, sandhill cranes, pelicans, herons, gulls, terns, cormorants, songbirds, crows and vultures.

The costs involved in maintaining these educational displays is nearly $75,000 per year just to feed the almost 200 permanent residents.

All of the Peace River Wildlife Center’s expenses are met through grants, donations, recycling efforts and gift shop sales. PRWC’s mission is carried out primarily by volunteers. Visitors are welcome at the Center and its gift shop from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. daily. The Center is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day to receive injured, orphaned or ill wildlife. Peace River Wildlife Center
